Ploughing for Lisbon!

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Our volunteers at the National Ploughing Championships have been overwhelmed by the positive support they’ve received. Farmers have been going out of their way to show their support for our volunteers and the Treaty. While the Irish Farmers Association have been backing the Treaty for a while, it’s great to see visible support for Lisbon on the ground as well.

It’s really encouraging to note a recent opinion poll which says that 80% of farmers will vote yes in the forthcoming referendum. The recent front page of the Irish Farmers’ Journal demonstrates that farmers are distinguishing between the ratification of the Treaty and their justifiable anger with the government.

There are threats facing Irish agriculture, many of which cannot be tackled by Ireland alone. Problems such as dumping from international markets and competition from low cost, low quality global competitors require a Europe wide approach as envisioned by the Lisbon Treaty.

Cox on positive poll

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009
Morning Ireland, 14th Spetember.

Our own Pat Cox was asked to debate the positive poll numbers from the Sunday Business Post/Red C Poll, projecting a Yes vote of 62%, with Libertas founder Declan Ganley.

Despite Ganley’s no-show, Pat explains that he still has to deal with the false concerns of conscription and an EU army while out canvassing. Cox explains here how any of the military operations have been entirely within the mandate of the United Nations and Ireland’s own Triple Lock policy. In the interview Cox refers to missions that the EU has undertaken. Those curious for the full list can click on the picture below for more information.

These were the insightful and inspired words of Dick Roche last night, when describing Nigel Farage’s contribution to the Lisbon Treaty debate.

The Yes Campaign Moves to Such Great Heights

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

We can now see the clear messages from the Yes campaign on lamp posts all over the country on why we should vote for the Treaty, in marked contrast to the ludicrous claims on the Cóir posters that went up over the weekend.

Ireland for Europe, We Belong, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael took to the streets yesterday to pitch their messages to the public with a variety of reasons to vote Yes coming across. Variations on the need for Ireland to be in Europe and how crucial Europe will be for aiding our economic recovery have been adopted as slogans, in addition to the need to secure Ireland’s future place in a democratic Europe.

Ireland for Europe 2Ireland for Europe 1Ireland for Europe is leading the charge with modern, dynamic posters reflecting people’s everyday concerns. We assert that this decision is a “Simple” one. We have three different messages on our posters, each placed between It’s Simple, and The Choice is Yours. These include: We Need Europe, I’m Safer in Europe and I want a Strong Voice in Europe. The concerns outlined are at the heart of the Treaty, and we’re sending positive and engaging messages out, rather than mistruths and fabrications. It is important that everyone takes responsibility for their own vote and make up their own minds based on the facts.

Book review- 100 Reasons to Vote Yes to the Lisbon Treaty

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

When you think of a book launch you might imagine a high-society affair with wine reception, precocious artisans and pretty socialites sitting in the environs of an upmarket hotel. Publisher Dan Caffrey obviously had such images in mind when he launched his company’s latest book, 100 Reasons to Vote Yes to Lisbon II, at Buswells on Kildare street last night (25/08/09).

Among the cocktail dresses and chit-chat sat the book’s author Nick McGinley, a previously little-known Dublin comedian who had spent the best part of his twenties as a stand-up comedian and radio essayist before he landed a job writing for The Daily Mail, lasting just two months before the establishment realised he wasn’t exactly Daily Mail material. McGinley was living in Dublin planning his next move when he was contacted by Caffrey with a view to writing a book on the Lisbon treaty, taking a humorous and soft approach to the treaty’s many facades.

Like McGinley, Dan Caffrey had been looking for an opening which might give his young publishing house, Trashface, its big break. The result is a refreshing and unique take on a topic which has dominated Irish print media and airwaves over the last eighteen months, often in the form of squabbling politicians and tedious debate. McGinley refuses to be shoved into this model, emphasising the ambiguous attractions of Euronews, the intimidating “Iron thighs” of Carla Bruni and the incentive of annoying the British Conservative Party as reasons to vote Yes. He also addresses areas such as neutrality, taxation and conscription in an effort to dispel the myths which dominated the campaign last time around. His closing argument, “So that Lisbon can go back to being a lovely place and not a byword for tedium”, is as good a reason as any.
