Evidence on the doorsteps suggests slight swing to Yes

The Irish Times has some encouraging news.

IN THE late stages of last year’s Lisbon campaign, a rumour emerged that Irish people would be conscripted into a European army if the treaty were adopted.

It was a viral story that started from the ground up. Like the phenomenon of Don’t Knows plumping for a No vote, its effect came on to the radar of the national media (and the Yes side) only in the closing days before polling, too late to counter it.

At the comparable phase of this campaign, in a sample of four residential estates in key constituencies, there is strong anecdotal evidence that the attitudes on the ground are markedly different this time.

And here’s what Fianna Fáil have to say http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIFlooDwBxQ

This isn’t a vote on Fianna Fáil’s performance, Frank.

There will be time enough for that judgement, and soon imo, but this referendum is too important to attempt to reduce it to the party political level. For that we hold general elections. Bear in mind that in all likelihood the incoming government will consist of parties also supporting the ratification of Lisbon. People who see the vote tomorrow as an anti-FF protest vote are only contradicting themselves.

An Ireland voting to put itself permanently into the second or third tier of European development will not be an easy one to govern, as it retreats behind the United Kingdom economically and socially …once again.

Something the Sinn Féin lobby seem extremely happy with for some reason.

My post did not refer to Fianna Fáil’s performance where did you get that idea from?

My post did however refer to the lies that they have put on their posters supporting a yes vote, based on that somehow a vote for the Lisbon Treaty would be “good for the economy”.

You seem very obsessed with Sinn Féin almost every post that you post on this blog you refer to SinnFéin even though the orignal post has nothing to do with SinnFéin.

On the subject of lies on posters Frank, any problem with the COIR ones?

I’m not obsessed with the Provos – just can’t stand their hypocritical bull such as “wanting to be part of Europe” when they have opposed the EEC/EU since the 1972 Treaty of Accession. Now they act as if they are the guardians of the Nice Treaty, MaryLou refers to Nice in such glowing terms these days its as if she was involved in its drafting.

Incidentally, my dislike of SF goes back a long way to when they were outright apologists for murder on this island. Maybe they’ve changed their tune on that too!. I must confess I’m not as yet convinced so when I see anti-militarist SF propaganda it’s difficult not to smirk at the irony & brass-neck of such people now parading themselves as a peace-lovin’ party.

And while I’m at it, who are you lecturing to? I don’t see any reference to Fianna Fáil or Youtube on the original post. Yet that’s what you put up in response to it.

    Kettle ..Pot?

  5. frank scahill says:

Sure i don’t know who i’m lecturing to,you hide behind the name of “Limerick4Europe”.So Limerick4Europe if you had bothered your arse to read the full article that this post refers to you would find the following sentence….”Fianna Fáil local representative Averil Power and a young team canvassed for a Yes vote on a Saturday afternoon.”
Now correct me if i am wrong but doesn’t the orignal post refer to the article in the irish times?
